IV Cannula (Peripheral)

Category

Vascular Access

Typical Use

Establish peripheral venous access for fluids and meds.

Description

A short plastic catheter inserted into a peripheral vein to provide access for intravenous fluids, medications, blood sampling, and short term infusion therapy, commonly placed in the hand or forearm. Peripheral IV cannulation requires aseptic technique, appropriate catheter size selection, and securement to minimize infiltration, phlebitis, and dislodgement. Regular site assessment, flushing protocols, and timely replacement according to institutional guidelines maintain patency and reduce infection risk. Peripheral cannulas are essential for acute care but are not suitable for long term vesicant infusions or central venous pressure monitoring, which require central access devices.
