Airway Management
Typical Use
Aid difficult endotracheal intubation.
Description
A flexible, semi rigid introducer used as an adjunct during difficult endotracheal intubation to guide the endotracheal tube into the trachea when direct visualization of the vocal cords is limited. The bougie is inserted into the trachea by feel or limited view, and the endotracheal tube is then railroaded over it into position; tactile feedback such as tracheal rings can confirm placement. It is a low cost, high yield tool in emergency airway algorithms and improves first pass success in challenging airways when used by trained providers. Proper technique, gentle manipulation, and confirmation of tube placement after bougie assisted intubation are essential to avoid airway trauma and ensure effective ventilation.
