Video Laryngoscope

Category

Airway Management

Typical Use

Improve visualization during intubation.

Description

A laryngoscope that incorporates a camera and video display to provide an enhanced, indirect view of the glottis and vocal cords, improving intubation success in patients with difficult airways or limited neck mobility. Video laryngoscopes reduce the need for extreme head extension and can facilitate teaching by allowing the operator and assistants to view the airway simultaneously on a screen. They are used in emergency departments, operating rooms, and critical care units and have been shown to increase first pass success rates in many settings when used by trained clinicians. Familiarity with device specific blades, camera cleaning, and troubleshooting of fogging or secretions is necessary to maintain performance and avoid delays during airway management.
