Typical Use
Provide scaffold to maintain vessel patency after angioplasty.
Description
A tubular metallic or polymeric scaffold deployed endovascularly to support the vessel wall, prevent elastic recoil, and maintain luminal patency after angioplasty or to exclude aneurysms when used as part of stent graft systems. Stents vary by material, design, and drug eluting properties to reduce restenosis and are selected based on vessel size, lesion length, and anatomic considerations. Deployment technique, accurate positioning, and postdilation are critical to achieve optimal apposition and reduce complications such as stent thrombosis or migration. Long term follow up includes imaging surveillance and antiplatelet therapy tailored to stent type and patient risk factors.
