Typical Use
Collect and monitor pleural drainage and maintain negative pressure.
Description
A closed drainage system that collects pleural fluid or blood from a chest tube while maintaining a water seal to prevent air re entry into the pleural space and allowing controlled application of suction when indicated. The system typically includes collection chambers, a water seal chamber, and a suction control chamber, enabling clinicians to monitor volume, character of drainage, and presence of air leaks. Proper setup, level placement relative to the patient, and regular assessment of tubing patency and seal integrity are essential to effective pleural management. Education of staff and patients about system alarms, mobilization, and safe handling reduces complications and supports timely chest tube removal.
