Description

A magnet based imaging system that uses radiofrequency pulses and magnetic field gradients to produce high contrast images of soft tissues, central nervous system structures, musculoskeletal anatomy, and vascular flow without ionizing radiation. MRI is invaluable for neurologic, musculoskeletal, and oncologic imaging, offering multiple sequences to characterize tissue composition, edema, and vascularity, but is contraindicated or requires caution in patients with certain implants or devices. Scan duration, patient claustrophobia, and need for gadolinium based contrast in some studies are practical considerations, and safety protocols for ferromagnetic objects and implant screening are mandatory. MRI interpretation by radiologists guides diagnosis, surgical planning, and longitudinal monitoring of disease.
