Typical Use
Excise abnormal cervical epithelium for diagnosis and treatment of cervical dysplasia.
Description
An electrosurgical instrument that uses a thin wire loop energized by high frequency current to excise a cone shaped specimen of cervical tissue for diagnosis and treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, combining tissue removal with simultaneous coagulation to reduce bleeding. LEEP is commonly performed in outpatient settings with local anesthesia and provides histologic specimens for margin assessment and staging; follow up includes surveillance for recurrence and counseling on reproductive implications. Proper technique, infection control, and adherence to guidelines for indications and specimen handling optimize diagnostic yield and minimize complications such as cervical stenosis or preterm birth risk in future pregnancies.
