Airway Management
Typical Use
Visualize vocal cords for endotracheal intubation.
Description
An instrument with a handle and blade (rigid or video equipped) used to visualize the larynx and vocal cords to facilitate placement of an endotracheal tube during airway management. Traditional direct laryngoscopes provide a line of sight view, while video laryngoscopes use a camera and screen to improve visualization in difficult airways and reduce cervical spine movement. Laryngoscopy is performed in emergency, operating room, and critical care settings for securing the airway, and requires training to minimize trauma, hypoxia, and aspiration risk. Proper selection of blade size, preoxygenation, and adjuncts such as bougies or stylets enhance success rates and patient safety.
