Airway Management
Typical Use
Provide supraglottic airway for ventilation.
Description
A supraglottic airway device that sits above the glottis to provide a secure airway for ventilation without entering the trachea, often used as an alternative to endotracheal intubation in elective anesthesia and emergency airway rescue. LMAs are quick to insert, require less laryngoscopic exposure, and are useful when intubation is difficult or when short term airway support is needed; they do not reliably protect against aspiration in high risk patients. Selection of appropriate size, correct insertion technique, and monitoring of ventilation and seal pressure are important to ensure effective oxygenation. LMAs are widely used in operating rooms, prehospital care, and procedural sedation but may be inadequate for prolonged ventilation or patients with high aspiration risk.
