Intramedullary Nail

Category

Orthopedic Implant

Typical Use

Provide load sharing fixation for long bone fractures.

Description

A metal rod inserted into the medullary canal of long bones such as the femur or tibia and locked with proximal and distal screws to stabilize diaphyseal fractures while allowing early weight bearing and alignment control, commonly used in trauma and orthopedic reconstruction. Nail selection, reaming technique, and locking screw configuration are tailored to fracture morphology and patient factors to optimize mechanical stability and promote union. Intraoperative imaging guides nail placement and reduction, and postoperative rehabilitation protocols support functional recovery while monitoring for complications such as infection, nonunion, or hardware failure.
