Intra Aortic Balloon Pump IABP

Category

Mechanical Circulatory Support

Typical Use

Augment coronary perfusion and reduce left ventricular afterload in cardiogenic shock.

Description

A catheter mounted balloon inserted into the descending aorta and timed to inflate during diastole and deflate during systole to increase diastolic coronary perfusion pressure and reduce left ventricular workload, used as temporary mechanical circulatory support in cardiogenic shock, refractory ischemia, or as a bridge to definitive therapy. IABP management requires hemodynamic monitoring, anticoagulation, and vigilant assessment for limb ischemia, balloon malfunction, or infection at the insertion site. While less invasive than other mechanical support devices, IABP effectiveness depends on rhythm stability and patient selection, and multidisciplinary care is essential for optimal outcomes.
