Implantable Loop Recorder

Category

Diagnostic Monitoring

Typical Use

Long term subcutaneous rhythm monitoring for unexplained syncope or cryptogenic stroke.

Description

A small, subcutaneously implanted device that continuously records cardiac rhythm for months to years and automatically or patient activatedly stores episodes of arrhythmia for later retrieval, offering high diagnostic yield for unexplained syncope, cryptogenic stroke, or infrequent palpitations. Implantable loop recorders provide remote monitoring capabilities and minimize the need for repeated external testing, but require minor surgical insertion, device interrogation, and eventual removal or replacement; interpretation integrates stored electrograms with clinical events and remote alerts. Patient selection balances invasiveness with expected diagnostic benefit and considers comorbidities, anticoagulation status, and follow up logistics.
