Obstetrics Surgical Cutting
Typical Use
Perform controlled perineal incision to enlarge the vaginal outlet.
Description
Specialized surgical scissors used to perform an episiotomy, a controlled incision of the perineum and vaginal mucosa to enlarge the vaginal outlet during childbirth when indicated to expedite delivery or reduce severe spontaneous tearing. Episiotomy technique, angle, and extent influence maternal outcomes including pain, healing, and risk of extension into third or fourth degree tears; selective rather than routine use is recommended based on clinical judgment. Postprocedure care includes layered repair, analgesia, infection prevention, and pelvic floor rehabilitation as needed to support recovery and long term pelvic function.
