Defibrillator (Automated External Defibrillator Monitor Defib)

Category

Emergency Resuscitation

Typical Use

Deliver therapeutic shocks for life threatening arrhythmias.

Description

A device that delivers controlled electrical energy to the heart to terminate life threatening arrhythmias such as ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia, restoring organized cardiac rhythm when successful. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) analyze the cardiac rhythm and advise shock delivery for lay rescuers, while advanced monitor defibrillators used by clinicians allow synchronized cardioversion, pacing, and monitoring functions. Rapid defibrillation within minutes of collapse significantly improves survival in out of hospital and in hospital cardiac arrest; integration with high quality CPR and post resuscitation care is essential. Regular maintenance, electrode replacement, and staff training ensure device readiness and effective use during emergencies.
