Description
An instrument used to separate the vaginal walls to expose the cervix for visual inspection, Pap smear collection, and minor procedures; specula are available in metal or disposable plastic designs and in various sizes. Proper insertion technique, lubrication, and patient positioning are important to minimize discomfort and obtain adequate cervical samples for cytology and HPV testing. The speculum exam is a routine component of gynecologic care, family planning visits, and evaluation of abnormal bleeding or discharge. Clinicians must maintain privacy, explain the procedure, and use appropriate infection control measures during speculum use.
