Vascular Access
Typical Use
Provide central venous access for medications, monitoring, or dialysis.
Description
A sterile kit containing components for placement of a central venous catheter into large central veins (internal jugular, subclavian, or femoral) to deliver vasoactive medications, parenteral nutrition, hemodialysis, or to monitor central venous pressure. Central line insertion requires ultrasound guidance, strict aseptic technique, and adherence to checklists to minimize complications such as pneumothorax, arterial puncture, and catheter related bloodstream infection. Postprocedure chest radiography or ultrasound confirms tip position and excludes immediate complications; ongoing catheter care includes dressing changes, hub disinfection, and prompt removal when no longer needed. Central venous access provides lifesaving therapies but demands rigorous training and infection prevention practices.
