Typical Use
Obtain marrow core and aspirate for hematologic diagnosis and staging.
Description
A sterile kit containing a biopsy needle, aspiration syringe, and fixation materials used to obtain bone marrow aspirate and core biopsy specimens from the posterior iliac crest or sternum for evaluation of hematologic disorders, malignancies, and marrow cellularity. Proper technique includes local anesthesia, patient positioning, and coordinated aspiration and core sampling to maximize diagnostic yield while minimizing pain and bleeding; specimens require appropriate handling for morphology, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular studies. Postprocedure care includes pressure application, wound dressing, and counseling on activity restrictions and signs of complications such as bleeding or infection.
