Anesthesia Monitoring
Typical Use
Assess depth of anesthesia using processed EEG signals.
Description
A bedside monitor that analyzes electroencephalographic patterns to generate a numeric index reflecting hypnotic depth during general anesthesia and sedation, assisting anesthesiologists in titrating anesthetic agents to reduce awareness risk and optimize recovery times. BIS monitoring complements clinical signs and hemodynamic parameters but is influenced by certain drugs and artifacts; it is used selectively in high risk cases and when neuromuscular blockade obscures clinical assessment. Proper electrode placement, calibration, and understanding of limitations are necessary to interpret BIS values accurately and to integrate them into anesthetic management.
