Typical Use
Inspect anal canal and distal rectum.
Description
A short rigid tubular instrument used to visualize the anal canal and distal rectum for evaluation of hemorrhoids, fissures, masses, and bleeding; anoscopy is a quick office procedure often performed with topical anesthesia. The anoscope provides direct visualization and allows minor interventions such as rubber band ligation or biopsy of suspicious lesions. Proper patient positioning, gentle insertion, and adequate lighting are important to minimize discomfort and obtain diagnostic views. Findings on anoscopy may prompt further evaluation with proctoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy depending on the clinical context.
