Sphincterotome

Category

Endoscopy ERCP

Typical Use

Perform controlled sphincterotomy of the biliary or pancreatic sphincter during ERCP.

Description

A specialized catheter with an electrosurgical cutting wire used during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography to incise the sphincter of Oddi, facilitating biliary or pancreatic duct access, stone extraction, and stent placement. Sphincterotomy requires precise technique, appropriate electrosurgical settings, and prophylactic measures to reduce post ERCP pancreatitis and bleeding risk; patient selection and informed consent are essential. Mastery of sphincterotome manipulation and complication management is central to therapeutic ERCP practice.
