Endoscopy Interventional
Typical Use
Obtain cytologic or histologic samples from pancreaticobiliary and mediastinal lesions under EUS guidance.
Description
A thin, hollow needle passed through an endoscopic ultrasound channel to perform targeted aspiration or core biopsy of lesions adjacent to the gastrointestinal tract, providing high diagnostic yield for pancreatic masses, lymph nodes, and subepithelial lesions with minimal invasiveness. EUS FNA requires coordination of endoscopic and cytopathology teams for rapid on site evaluation when available, and technique selection needle gauge, suction, stylet use influences sample quality. Complication rates are low but include bleeding, infection, and pancreatitis; careful patient selection and prophylactic measures reduce risks.
