External Temporary Pacemaker

Category

Emergency Temporary Pacing

Typical Use

Provide temporary cardiac pacing in acute bradycardia or heart block.

Description

A temporary pacing system that provides external or transvenous electrical stimulation to the heart in acute settings such as symptomatic bradycardia, heart block, or perioperative conduction disturbances until definitive therapy is available. External pacing can be transcutaneous using adhesive pads or transvenous via a catheter based lead placed in a central vein, with transvenous pacing offering more reliable capture and patient comfort. Temporary pacing requires continuous monitoring, sedation for transcutaneous methods if prolonged, and readiness to transition to permanent pacing when indicated. Management includes monitoring capture thresholds, lead position, and infection prevention for transvenous systems.
