Typical Use
Drain bladder continuously.
Description
An indwelling urinary catheter with an inflatable retention balloon placed in the bladder to provide continuous drainage of urine for urinary retention, accurate output measurement, perioperative management, or bladder irrigation. Foley catheters come in various sizes and materials and require aseptic insertion technique, securement, and closed drainage systems to minimize infection risk. Long term catheterization increases the risk of catheter associated urinary tract infection and urethral trauma, so indications should be regularly reassessed and catheter care protocols followed. Proper documentation of insertion, balloon volume, and ongoing monitoring of urine characteristics are part of safe catheter management.
