Typical Use
Drain air or fluid from pleural space.
Description
A flexible tube inserted through the chest wall into the pleural space to evacuate air (pneumothorax), blood (hemothorax), or effusion, connected to a closed drainage system with water seal and suction as needed to re expand the lung and monitor ongoing drainage. Chest tube insertion requires sterile technique, appropriate analgesia or anesthesia, and imaging guidance to confirm placement and avoid injury to intrathoracic structures. Management includes monitoring output, maintaining an airtight seal, assessing for air leaks, and timely removal when clinically indicated to reduce infection and discomfort. Proper securement, dressing care, and patient mobilization are important to prevent dislodgement and promote recovery.
