Allis Forceps

Category

Grasping

Typical Use

Hold heavy tissue or fascia with firm grip.

Description

Toothed forceps designed to provide a strong grip on slippery or dense tissues such as fascia, bowel, or skin during retraction or specimen handling; their teeth provide secure purchase but can be traumatic to delicate tissues. Allis forceps are useful for temporary traction and exposure but should be used judiciously to avoid tissue injury when preservation is required. They are commonly used in general and gynecologic surgery for specimen removal and wound retraction, and are typically applied for short durations. Proper selection and gentle handling minimize tissue damage and improve surgical outcomes.
