Typical Use
Examine rectum and distal colon.
Description
A longer rigid instrument than an anoscope used to inspect the rectum and distal sigmoid colon, enabling diagnosis and minor procedures such as biopsy, polypectomy, or foreign body removal in the distal colon. Proctoscopy is used in evaluation of rectal bleeding, pain, and suspected distal lesions and may be performed in outpatient or procedural settings with appropriate analgesia. Visualization quality depends on bowel preparation, lighting, and technique; findings guide further diagnostic steps including full colonoscopy when indicated. Clinicians must counsel patients about potential discomfort and postprocedure expectations, including transient bleeding or cramping.
