Colposcope

Category

Diagnostic

Typical Use

Magnified examination of cervix and vagina.

Description

A binocular magnifying instrument that provides a high resolution, illuminated view of the cervix and vaginal epithelium to identify abnormal vascular patterns, acetowhite changes, and lesions after abnormal cytology or positive HPV testing. Colposcopy guides targeted biopsies and treatment decisions for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and is performed by trained clinicians in outpatient settings with topical anesthesia as needed. The procedure enhances diagnostic accuracy compared with naked eye inspection and allows documentation with photography or video for follow up. Patient counseling about findings, biopsy risks, and follow up care is an integral part of colposcopic evaluation.
