Typical Use
Depress tongue to view oral cavity and throat.
Description
A simple disposable flat wooden or plastic blade used to depress the tongue and improve visualization of the oropharynx during examination, throat swabs, or minor procedures. Tongue depressors facilitate inspection for tonsillar enlargement, exudates, mucosal lesions, and foreign bodies and are commonly used in primary care, urgent care, and emergency settings. They are inexpensive, single use items that reduce cross contamination risk and are often paired with light sources such as penlights for thorough inspection. Proper technique includes gentle placement to avoid gagging and ensuring patient comfort, especially in pediatric or sensitive patients.
