Tocodynamometer

Category

Obstetrics Monitoring

Typical Use

Measure frequency and relative intensity of uterine contractions.

Description

A noninvasive external sensor placed on the maternal abdomen to detect uterine wall tension and record contraction frequency and timing, commonly used in conjunction with fetal heart rate monitoring during labor. Tocodynamometers provide continuous contraction tracings that help clinicians assess labor progress, contraction patterns, and the relationship between contractions and fetal heart rate changes. While external tocodynamometry does not quantify absolute contraction pressure, it is useful for trend monitoring and for coordinating interventions such as oxytocin titration or analgesia. Proper placement, securement, and periodic repositioning improve signal quality, and internal pressure catheters may be used when precise contraction pressure measurement is required.
