Tilt Table

Category

Diagnostic Testing

Typical Use

Evaluate syncope and autonomic dysfunction by controlled positional changes.

Description

A motorized table that safely tilts a patient from supine to upright positions while monitoring heart rate and blood pressure to provoke and document neurally mediated syncope, orthostatic hypotension, or autonomic failure under controlled conditions. Tilt table testing helps differentiate cardiac from neurogenic causes of syncope and guides management such as fluid and medication strategies or pacemaker consideration; protocols include baseline monitoring, tilt angles, pharmacologic provocation when indicated, and continuous ECG and blood pressure recording. Proper patient selection, informed consent, and readiness to treat induced syncope or arrhythmia are essential for safe and informative testing.
