Orogastric Tube OG Tube

Category

Gastroenterology Pediatrics

Typical Use

Provide gastric access in neonates and patients where nasal route is contraindicated.

Description

A tube inserted through the mouth into the stomach for decompression, feeding, or medication delivery when nasal access is not feasible or contraindicated, commonly used in neonatal and critical care settings. Orogastric placement requires careful technique to avoid airway compromise, confirmation of gastric position, and secure fixation to prevent dislodgement; oral hygiene and monitoring for aspiration are important aspects of care. OG tubes are often used temporarily until more durable enteral access is established.
