Surgical Access
Typical Use
Establish pneumoperitoneum and access for laparoscopy.
Description
A Veress needle or trocar is used to insufflate the abdomen with carbon dioxide and create initial access for laparoscopic surgery, providing a safe working space for visualization and instrument manipulation. Entry technique varies (open Hasson technique, Veress needle, or optical trocar) and is chosen based on patient factors and surgeon preference to minimize risk of bowel or vascular injury. After insufflation, trocars of appropriate size are placed to accommodate laparoscopic instruments and cameras, and port sites are secured to prevent gas leakage and hernia formation. Vigilance during entry, awareness of prior surgeries and adhesions, and readiness to convert to open access are important safety considerations.
