Surgical Access
Typical Use
Create ports for laparoscopic instruments.
Description
A sharp obturator and hollow sleeve (cannula) used to penetrate the abdominal wall and establish working ports for laparoscopic instruments and scopes, enabling minimally invasive access to the peritoneal cavity. Trocar insertion requires careful technique to avoid injury to viscera and blood vessels, and modern safety trocars and optical entry devices reduce the risk of complications. Once placed, cannulas maintain pneumoperitoneum and allow instrument exchange while preserving the seal; port site closure and prevention of hernia are important postoperative considerations. Surgeons must select appropriate trocar size and location based on the planned procedure and patient anatomy to optimize ergonomics and safety.
