Jackson Pratt Drain JP Drain

Category

Surgical Drainage

Typical Use

Provide closed suction drainage of postoperative fluid collections.

Description

A soft silicone drain connected to a compressible bulb reservoir that creates gentle negative pressure to evacuate serous fluid, blood, or exudate from surgical sites, reducing hematoma and seroma formation and facilitating wound healing. JP drains are commonly used after abdominal, breast, and orthopedic procedures and require secure fixation, regular emptying and measurement of output, and sterile technique during handling to reduce infection risk. Criteria for removal include decreasing output and clinical assessment, and patient education on drain care supports safe outpatient management when applicable.
